JCC Central

t one time, many Detroit Jews considered the
Jewish Federation to be the central address for
Detroit Jewry. But today, Federation leaders are
among those who bestow that honor on the Jewish
Community Center.
From humble beginnings 74 years ago in frame
shanties on East Philadelphia in Detroit, the now two-
campus, suburban-based JCC is arguably the best-known
Jewish agency in our community. From a maze-like
building in its second location on Melbourne in 1929,
the JCC served 100,000 people. It now serves 10 times
that number a year, with an annual budget of $9 million.
Notably, construction of the JCC's first modern
facility at Holbrook and Woodward in 1933 was
preceded by a clarion call among some for, instead, a
Jewish hospital — something that wouldn't come to
fruition for 20 more years.
In today's cover story (pages 6-11), Staff Writer Harry
Kirsbaum, under Story Development Editor Keri Guten
Cohen's direction, updates the status of a major fund-
raising drive that will bring renovations to both the JCC's
West Bloomfield and Oak Park buildings as well as create
a $7 million endowment for programming and
enrichment.
