"There are some things that have to
be resolved because we obviously can-
not block off their present entrance,"
said Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig, HMC
founder and executive director. "There
are different options being discussed,
and supposedly they will be narrowed
down to one. We are told it's going to
be very soon."
New east and south entryways to
the JCC are an option, but that's still
conceptual, Slatkin said.
Rabbi Rosenzveig said that
Federation and Foundation officials
share information with him on a
weekly basis.
Slatkin agreed. "We need to get an
exact handle on what we're going to
do in Phase II before we can say, 'Be
here or be there,'" he said. "We want
them [HMG] to expand on our cam-
pus. We think they belong on our
campus, and we're excited about it,
but, unfortunately, we have to get our
arms around this first."

Renovation costs money, and the dol-
lars spent come from half of the
Federation's Millennium Campaign.
The campaign began with $18 mil-
lion planned for construction and $7
million for endowments, but con-
struction costs and project goals have
taken on a new dimension, said the
JCC's Wolfe.
"Given the need to fund the cost
an adequate
of renovation and
endowmen 'Oth Federation and
Foun ion approved expansion of
paign to $30 million in the Jan.
19 combined Federation/Foundation

board meeting," he said, noting the
campaign's current figure of $25.8
million. Recommendation for the
increase came from the JCC board,
which took it to the Federation and
Foundation.
"They discussed it and approved
it, and want the capital campaign to
run no later than Nov. 30, 2000,"
Wolfe said.
Other major gifts of under $1 mil-
lion are being sought. In April, JCC
members and the general community
will be invited through a series of
open houses to make donations with-
in their personal budgets. JCC board
members Douglas Bloom, Sharon
Hart and Susan Citrin will head the .
community-wide appeal.
"This is a much broader project,"
said Herman Frankel, chairman of the
Kahn Building renovation committee.
"Like everything under the sun, it's
taking longer than we'd like, it's cost-
ing more than we'd like, but the results
we're getting are very satisfying."
Said Hugh Greenberg, JCC capital
and endowment drive chairman: "We
are gratified by the response of the
community up to this point, and
have found people very receptive to
the whole idea of both the capital and
endowment programs, and people
have responded with great generosity.
"We would have been over our
original goal at this point," he added.
"Unfortunately, we found that there
are more needs than we anticipated,
so we've kind of raised the bar on
how much we need. We're confident
that that amount will be forthcoming
and that we will achieve what we
have to do to make it successful." ❑
