The film festival's featured attraction
for Saturday night, at 7 p.m., is Walter
Rosenblum: In Search of Pitt Street. It is
an intimate portrait of the visionary,
world-renowned photographer created
by his daughter, Nina. She is an Oscar-
nominated and Emmy Award-winning
producer, director and writer of film
and television documentaries, for which
she has won many awards and honors.
Combining interviews, vintage film
and Rosenblum's impressive black-
and-white photos spanning 50 years,
the 60-minute film, with him narrat-
ing, expertly captures the essence of
one of the most important photogra-
phers of the 20th century. His work is
featured in major museums and col-
lections around the world. The film
premiered in Los Angeles last
October.
Walter Rosenblum covers all of his
work, ranging from the innocent
images of his youth as he returns to
his Lower East Side New York neigh-
borhood and even goes inside his
actual old Pitt Street apartment, to
the harrowing realities of World War
II. He once spent six months of a
New York photo assignment taking
pictures on Pitt Street alone. He also
spent 10 months on an assignment
in Haiti, and photographed the
plight of Spanish Civil War refugees
in France and Mexican migrant

works in the Southwest U.S.
The film shows how Rosenblum
got some of the first photos of the D-
Day landing at Normandy, recording
how one GI became a hero on the
beach by rescuing soldiers from a cap-
sized boat. He even captured some
Germans himself and earned several
medals, including a Purple Heart
When he was shot in the leg.
He added filming to his duties when
the regular cameraman was killed, and
he became the first person to film the
interior of the Nazi concentration
camp at Dachau, showing railroad cars
full of bodies.
An early member of the legendary
Photo League, Rosenblum, now 81,
taught for 40 years at Brooklyn College
and also a stint at the Yale Summer
School of Music and Art, and contin-
ues to teach, lecture and photograph
around the world. His wife, Naomi,
75, is an art historian.
'A photograph is like a love letter,"
Rosenblum points out, "only you're
using the photo, not the written docu-
ment."
Said a Haitian teacher of
Rosenblum: "He's a human being look-
ing at other human beings... that's what
makes him a great photographer. He's
able to pick out the beauty and
humanity of every scene" - which is
exactly what this film does.
