New York — A United Jewish
Communities video was recognized
as among the world's best by the
New York Festivals International
Film and Video Competition. A
Legacy of Light earned a finalist cer-
tificate.
The eight-minute video, pro-
duced by the UJC Marketing and
Public Affairs Department, shows
how and why leaving an endowed
legacy to federation is the means to
secure the Jewish future.
UJC, the new entity formed by
the merger last year of United Jewish
Appeal, the United Israel Appeal and
the Council of Jewish Federations, is
the dominant fund-raising arm for
American Jewry.

Yad Vashem
Unveils Library

Jerusalem/JTA — The Yad Vashem
Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem
unveiled its new archives and library.
The building houses 55 million
documents relating to the Holocaust.
One-third of the funding for the $66
million project came from the Claims
Conference, which used monies it
received as reparations for unclaimed
Jewish properties in Germany. The
remaining funding came from individ-
ual donors.

U.S. Donors Give
To Israeli Candidates

Los Angeles/JTA — American donors
have poured $10 million to $15 mil-
lion into each of the last two Israeli
elections, according to the Los
Angeles Times.
The estimate of the amounts,
apparently made through campaign
contributions or through nonprofit
organizations that directly or indi-
rectly support a candidate or politi-
cal party, was reported on Feb. 25.
The article's publication came
after Israel's state comptroller fined
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's
One Israel coalition $3.2 million for
campaign-finance violations. No
American donors have yet to be
implicated in those violations.
Israeli elections are heavily subsidized
by the country's taxpayers and private
campaign contributions are governed by

tight restrictions. The laws ban any
direct donations from foreigners, as well
as from any "commercial entity."
Contributions by American citi-
zens to Israeli political campaigns,
besides skirting Israeli and possibly
U.S. laws, raise even more funda-
mental concerns.
"The possibilities for abuse are
almost unlimited," said Abraham
Foxman, national director of the
Anti-Defamation League. "What is
at stake is the sovereignty of the
Israeli voting public."

Isolate Far Right,
Austria Is Told

Washington—B'nai B'rith
International and B'nai B'rith
Europe leaders this week advised
Austrian President Thomas Klestil
that they support the political, bilat-
eral isolation of Austria's present
government, headed by Chancellor
Wolfgang Schuessel. The govern-
ment includes the far-right Freedom
Party of Joerg Haider.
The delegation recommended
that Austria's leadership combat
anti-Jewish and anti-foreigner preju-
dice and promote the "development
of a just society."
Meeting with Klestil in Vienna,
the delegation made clear that B'nai
B'rith does not favor a trade boycott.
In Washington, B'nai B'rith
International President Richard
Heidman, a former Detroiter, praised
the delegation for "reiterating our
position that, given the history of
Austria, we have no tolerance for any
movement, like the Freedom Parry
that seems to appeal to antisemitism
and other forms of bigotry."

Israeli Research
To Halt Cancer?

Jerusalem/JTA — Two researchers at
the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
School of Pharmacy developed a
new series of drugs that may stop
the spread of malignant cancer cells.
They discovered substances that
stop the activity of enzymes secreted
by cancerous cells and enable the
cells to divide and spread in the
body. If the treatment is successful
in clinical tests, developers believe
patients could enjoy a good quality
of life while undergoing treatment
that involves neither surgery nor
chemotherapy.
