abriel Ian Gould, a
University of Michigan
doctoral candidate, experi-
enced gamelan music
through a class assignment, quickly
embraced its sounds, became a per-
former and now has used the style in a
composition commissioned by the
Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra.
Lokananta, which will be presented
Saturday at the Michigan Theater,
refers to the myth surrounding the
first Javanese gamelan, a traditional
percussion orchestra from the Courts
of Central Java. Playing the piece will
be the symphony and the University
of Michigan Gamelan Ensemble.
"Because there have been very few
compositions written for gamelan and
orchestra, the models are scarce," says
Gould, 26. "That has been the chal-
lenge and the fun. Marrying these two
mediums is a huge stretch, and I'm
absolutely honored that I'm the one
who got to do it."
The new work is offered as part of

"Continental Harmony," a national
musical celebration of the millennium
that's sponsored by the American
Composers Forum, the National
Endowment for the Arts and the
White House Millennium Council.
Ann Arbor's professional orchestra won
Michigan's sole award to commission a
new work, chosen over 19 contenders.
Gould, who plays with the univer-
sity ensemble, will sit out Lokananta,
but join his fellow musicians for the
rest of the program, which includes
other gamelan pieces and works by
Aaron Copland and Anton Dvorak.
In the days preceding the adult
concert, a shortened version of
Gould's composition will be presented
during Daytime Youth Concerts. The
maestro will be Arie Lipsky, one of
five finalists for music director/con-
ductor of the Ann Arbor Symphony.
"We're going to print the story of
Lokananta in the program notes," says
Gould, who has been playing gamelan
for almost three years. "I'm not going
to be playing the piece because I want
to be able to hear it in its entirety.
"I fell into gamelan while taking a
