So must it be for our Jewish com-
munities, too. There are those of us
who begin with the sacred and
devote life, love and energy to mak-
ing God's presence felt. There are
others of us who begin with the
ordinary, the pedestrian, and strug-
gle conscientiously to elevate the
mundane act into an act of faith, a
mitzvah. We need our leaders, both
religious and communal, to have the
integrity and vigor of Moses. Let our
organizations, schools and syna-
gogues become infused with the
same sense of dedication, creativity
and zeal with which our ancestors
constructed their Mishkan. Then,
truly, will we say the words recited
as we complete studying a book of
Torah, "Chazak, Chazak!
rnitchazeikr (Be strong [in faith]!
Be strong [in everyday life and deci-
sions]! Then we will strengthen each
other!) 0

The Bible uses different words
to describe God's dwelling
place, the place for worship
and assembly. They include:
Mishkan, Tabernacle; ohel, tent;
bayit, house; and heichal,
palace. What is meant by each
of these terms? If you were
Moses blessing the people at
the completion of the
Tabernacle, what would you
say? What can you do to par-
ticipate more in the communi-
ty and to ensure its stability?
