with AIPAC [American Israel Public
Affairs Committee], ADL [Anti-
Defamation League] and either of the
two AJCs [American Jewish
Committee and American Jewish '
Congress], there are a lot of organs
that are Jewish organs that are well
representing the Jewish people."
From its inception and into the
1940s, the NCCJ took a much more
active role in Jewish and Catholic
affairs. The NCCJ was outspoken in its
time and did a lot of advocacy. But if a
Father Coughlin were to surface today,
May believes the most active institution
against him would be the ADL.
"This is not a criticism of NCCJ,"
May said. "We would be there, but we
would not be representing the Jewish
people. We would try to be representing
the entire community saying that, 'This
could happen to you, too. It is not just
the Jews who are under attack heke.'"
May estimates 25 percent of NCCJ's
local chapter are "Jewish participants,
Jewish donors, Jewish awardees."
Another area in which NCCJ has
been active locally is an educational
outreach program. It goes directly into
the schools, usually secondary schools,
providing sensitivity training in places
with potential or actual areas of con-
flict. West Bloomfield Township has
used this service.
"We also have direct-action pro-
grams designed to familiarize youth
with NCCJ, and do good work at the
same time. These teach people to get
along, to resolve conflicts, to set up
methods of resolving conflicts, and to
turn peer pressure into an asset rather
than a professional liability," May said.
At the close of May's term as presi-
dent, he will have served a total of
eight years as one of the NCCJ co-
chairs. He already has served four years
in that capacity, and will serve two
more afterward. He will serve as vice
chair nationally for another three years.
May becomes president of Temple
Beth El in July. He said, "The temple
has played and continues to play a
large role in the area of social justice
That gives me a strength at NCCJ
because of all my Jewish work." May
is also active with AIPAC and serves
on the board of the ADL.
Blessed with a great singing voice,
May often displays his cantorial style
at the temple's Friday night services.
He played an active, behind-the-scenes
role in bringing Coretta Scott King to
the temple on March 21, but gra-
ciously gives the credit to others.
A believer in the rebirth of down-
town Detroit, May is an investor in
the MotorCity Casino. ❑
