CHARD IAKE,

There, a chance encounter with the
story editor of Sanford and Son led to
a writing job on the NBC show.
Shandling went on to write for
Welcome Back, Kotter and Three's
Company, but soon was frustrated
with the formulaic nature of sitcoms.
After surviving a near-fatal car acci-
dent in 1977, which put him on the
critical list for two days, Shandling re-
thought his life and decided to switch
to standup comedy, making his debut
at an amateur night at The Comedy
Store nightclub.
He also began to meditate and to
read about Buddhism (a recent
favorite: Rodger Kamenetz's best-seller,
The Jew in the Lotus). By 1981, he was
performing on The Tonight Show,
which named him permanent guest
host, after Joan Rivers, in 1986. When
Shandling decided it would be more
fun to mock a talk show than to host
one, The Larry Sanders Show was
born.
Art tended to imitate life on the
sitcom, and nowhere more so than
in the final season last year. On
camera, Sanders was embroiled in a
nasty falling-out with his duplicitous
agent; off camera, Shandling had
filed a $100 million lawsuit against
his former best friend and manager,
Brad Grey, for allegedly cheating
him out of lucrative TV deals.
Shandling settled out of court last
summer, not long after he pulled the
plug or Sanders because of creative
burnout.
He said he has one regret about the
sitcom: He wishes he had convinced
his hero, Woody Allen, to appear as a
faux guest on the show "But I never
even tried," he laments; he admits he
was perhaps too daunted by Allen,
whom he has met on two occasions
but was too intimidated to converse
with. Suddenly, with a dreamy expres-
sion, Shandling begins to spin a fanta-
sy scenario of Woody Allen-meets-
Larry Sanders. "It would start with
Larry backstage, desperate to meet
Woody Allen for the first time," the
actor says, looking vulnerable with a
furrowed brow and his blue eyes open
wide.
"But when they finally do meet, in
the green room, nothing is said, and
there's awkwardness. Larry leaves after
five painful minutes, and yet he is still
excited that he met Woody Allen."
