self-help best-sellers.
The first volume has sold
more than 28,000 copies in
the 11 months it has been
out, which is less than more
mainstream titles like the
Chicken Soup for the Soul
series, but considered by many
in the world of Jewish books
to be a best-seller.
Rabbi Twerski's perspective
brings together several worlds:
He's a 69-year-old Orthodox
rabbi, a descendent of the
Baal Shem Tov, who has
developed groundbreaking
strategies for helping people
deal with addiction. The
founder and medical director
emeritus of Gateway Rehabilitation
Center in Pittsburgh, a leading center
for addiction treatment, he now
divides his time between Pittsburgh
and Monsey, N.Y., and remains an
avid Pittsburgh Braves fan.
He held a pulpit in Milwaukee
until 1959, when he graduated from
Marquette University Medical School
and went on to do psychiatry training
in Pittsburgh. A 1959 profile of him
in Time magazine described how his
long black beard required a special
extra-long mask in surgery. The beard,
