T

hirteen volunteers representing Michigan Israel Connection's
Otzma program pitched in on Feb. 6 to help serve meals at the
Baldwin Church Soup Kitchen.
The group chose to prepare and serve sandwiches and drinks at
the Pontiac facility for Otzma's first annual Volunteer
Day. Over 200 lunches were provided.
Otzma, a project of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, is a yearlong program of volun-
tarism in Israel. Participants from previous years' trips
joined the Volunteer Day.
The Otzma committee is co-chaired by Noah Krugel
and Jon Marx, both of West Bloomfield, who with his
wife, Judy, volunteer at the soup kitchen on a monthly
basis. The Marxes suggested the trip to the group.
Allison Rabinovitz, staff associate of the Michigan
Israel Connection and a 1998-'99 Oztma participant,
says she enjoyed the "hands-on" of the volunteer
endeavor. She'd never worked in a soup kitchen before,
she says, and "everyone felt it was rewarding to see [the
benefit of] their help right away."
