Canadian May
Lose Citizenship
83 Years & Still Delivering
The Model Year 2000
Toronto (JTA) — A Canadian judge
ruled that a man obtained Canadian
citizenship in 1954 by fraudulently
concealing his wartime past.
Helmut Oberlan served in a
German unit during World War II
that murdered more than 91,000 Jews.
Canada's immigration minister can
now recommend that Oberlan, a
native Ukrainian, be stripped of his
Canadian citizenship.

Arab Schools
To Teach Torah

Jerusalem (JTA) — All Israeli state
schools, including those in Arab areas,
will be required to teach Torah studies,
according to a new law that religious
parties pushed through a virtually
empty Knesset.
Rabbi Michael Melchior, minister
for Israeli society and world Jewish
communities, said decisions like this
should be made after a dialogue and
that quick legislation on such matters
only "distances people" from Judaism.

France Plans
Day Of Tribute
Paris (JTA) — French legislators passed
a law calling for a national day of trib-
ute to citizens who helped Jews escape
arrest during the Nazi occupation.
Some 1,900 French people have
been recognized as Righteous Among
the Nations by the Yad Vashem
Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem.
They will be honored on France's day
of Holocaust remembrance, held
annually on July 16.
The history of French complicity in
the Holocaust will become part of that
country's secondary school curriculum
this fall.
The new teaching program will deal
with the wartime deportations from
the Drancy concentration camp near
Paris, as well as the detention of thou-
sands of Jews at the city's former bicy-
cle stadium in 1942 before they were
transported to Auschwitz.
