debate Monday evening.
One successful resolution that sur-
prised and even angered some dele-
gates toughened a stance against pub-
lic funds for private schools.
By a vote of 318 to 259 (groups of
various sizes are assigned different
numbers of votes), the JCPA eliminat-
ed its support for "designated, extant,
court-approved, non-sectarian bene-
fits" for private schools. Now, the
agency simply "reaffirms its vigorous
opposition to the use of public funds
to support private sectarian schools."
Reflecting tension as to whether the
JCPA should promote a broad agenda
or a more sectarian Jewish one, dele-
gates from Richmond, Va., refused to
vote on matters not "Jewish per se,"
explained Stephen Meyers. So, they
skipped votes calling for "meaningful"
gun safety legislation and expressing
JCPA's "unequivocal opposition to the
practice of racial profiling" — both of
which passed. •
Other successful resolutions includ-
ed: calling on South Carolina to
remove the Confederate battle flag
from the state capital and urging pro-
fessional sports teams with names con-
sidered derogatory to native Americans
— such as the Washington Redskins
football team or the Atlanta Braves
baseball team — to change their
names to ones deemed not offensive.
After much discussion; a tempered
resolution praising Pope John Paul II
for his upcoming trip to Israel and
work in Catholic-Jewish relations was
passed.
Israel's government and American
Jewish groups - are angered by the
recent Vatican-PLO pact. In it, the
Vatican called on all parties to refrain
from making "unilateral decisions" on
Jerusalem's final status.
The issue had created polite sparks
an hour earlier as Baltimore
Archbishop Cardinal William H.
Keeler defended the Vatican's action as
consistent with long-held positions.
He added it should be welcomed for
getting the Palestinian Authority for
"the first time" to renounce its own
unilateral claim on Jerusalem.
The resolution passed with an
added reference to Israel "and its capi-
tal, Jerusalem."
In an opening address, now resign-
ing JCPA head Dr. Lawrence Rubin
surprised some by not chastising those
who have publicly questioned his lead-
ership.
He embraced a recent report, he
