"It just doesn't work if there isn't an even number. As it gets more popular, it will bring out people who wouldn't normally go to 'bar night.'" Goodman assists Rabbi Hochstadt in running the program, but jokes that if he were needed to make the numbers even, he would be glad to help out. Each session is broken down into one of two age ranges, 21-35 or 33- 49. Goodman wants to see these ranges narrowed even further, to ensure that the participants will have more in common. He envisions that the program could be held every Sunday evening, each time for one of four different age ranges. Currently, explains Goodman, more people are attending the session for the 33-49 age group. "They are just not as self-conscious about their desire to meet someone special." After each session, participants are asked to write down the assigned number of the people they would like to get to know better on a "real" date. If two people select one another, it's consid- ered a match, and Rabbi Hochstadt contacts them both within 48 hours of the session to divulge the phone numbers. Garfield had two matches from her session. She was excited, but cautions that if friends attend the program together, they should be prepared for the possibility that the person one friend thought he or she "clicked" with might choose the other friend instead. Rabbi Hochstadt emphasizes that Speedating is not a religious pro- gram, but serves only to "re-inspire people and address the issue of dat- ing in the most direct way possible — by getting single Jewish men and women in the same room together." He says he spoke to many Jewish singles, and found them searching for new and different ways to meet other singles. Hochstadt is promoting the pro- gram through flyers and advertise- ments, but not just in the Jewish News. "We are advertising in the Metro Times and the Mirror, with the hopes of reaching as wide an audience as possible," he explains. The one thing that is not adver- tised, however, is the location, which will change on a regular basis. The program is not designed to allow peo- ple to just drop in — everyone must pre-register. The Scene "This is just a new way to intro- duce people to one another — no pressure, no fluff," says Rabbi Hochstadt. "I know there are many (single) Jews out there, but no one sees them. We're going to keep trying this until it works." ❑ , To register for Speedating, call Aish HaTorah, (248) 737-0400. Happenings For young adults, college age through 30-something.
