remember ferrying her books at
Central High years back. And Jack,
at 84, is still a very ardent golfer. We
recently lost songwriter Dave Taxe,
formerly of Northern High in
Detroit.
"Dr. Edward Missen and I used to
make French fries at each other's
house, going back and forth between
his home on Tuxedo and my house
just over on Monterey. Ed is a
retired gynecologist, and at 83, runs
every day to keep in shape. Lucille
Kaplan-Grayson has done big things
with the stock market.
"I was in charge of all six
reunions here of former Detroiters,
five at the Beverly-Hilton and one at
the Sportsman Lodge. But we have
not had a local reunion of ex-
Detroiters in the last three years,
where the Vernor's Ginger Ale and
Sanders Hot Fudge kept everyone in
a real Detroit mood.
"Back in 1936, I worked in the
Grand Ballroom at Eastwood Park,
Gratiot and Eight Mile Road, where
I had the pleasure of hearing such
great bands as Duke Ellington, Cab
Calloway, Ted Weems, Glenn Miller,
the Dorsey Brothers, Ina Ray
Hutton, Phil Spitalne, Art Mooney,
Ted Lewis, Ben Bernie, Guy
Lombardo, Kay Kayser, Harry
James, Sammy Kaye and so many
others.
"Danny Thomas, then known as
Amos Jacobs, used to come out and
entertain at Eastwood Park's swim-
ming pool on Thursday afternoons.
Garwood Van's orchestra used to be
at Webster Hall in those days, and
later became a business customer of
mine in Las Vegas. Eight Mile Road
was the city limits in those days, and
Boblo,.Tashmoo and Put-In-Bay
were popular river cruises, aided by
stops at Vernor's for ginger ale and
Sanders for hot fudge sundaes."
