"He had access to a wide
variety of recordings that
he brought home for me
to hear. He noticed my
growing interest in
singing and accommo-
dated it by providing me
with recordings of male
singers, most of whom
were coincidentally
Jewish."
Singer's mother, the
Tel Aviv-born Sarka
Rivka Talmy, met her
husband when he was
visiting Israel. Currently
residing in Minnesota,
she also encouraged her
son's artistic pursuits and
is an artist herself.
"Many of the pieces she
produces have biblical
references or allegories
relating to current events
either in her life or in
today's world," says her
son.
Singer earned a bache-
lor's degree in music and
mass communications
from the University of
Wisconsin and a master's
degree in vocal perfor-
mance from the
University of Michigan,
where he had a full
tuition fellowship.
"After Cantor Dubov
heard me sing, he imme-
diately began talking to
me about the cantorate,"
Singer says. "I had never
thought of my voice type
in those terms, but he
informed me that now
there are all sorts of can-
tors with various voice types."
Singer has attended the Israel
Vocal Arts Institute, where he
debuted his first Jewish composition;
studied voice with Metropolitan
Opera baritone Mark Oswald; and
learned about Sephardic music from
New York vocal coach Nico Castel.
Singer was hired to perform with
members of the New Israeli Opera in
a concert of American music and par-
ticipated in operatic performances.
While the idea of taking on reli-
gious work was taking hold, Singer
learned that his father had terminal
cancer. Remembering his promise, the
younger Singer scheduled his bar
mitzvah, hoping it would uplift the
man's outlook. Unfortunately, his
dad's condition worsened a couple of
weeks before the bar mitzvah, and

— Daniel Singer
Barry Singer, who grew up in Detroit,
passed away only a week before his
son would chant from the Torah.
"I feel better about having fulfilled
my promise to him and about having
chosen a career that I know is right
for me," Singer says. "I felt destined
to have my bar mitzvah, and the
study of Torah motivated an intro-
spective study of my life and the lives
of those who most clearly affected
mine." ❑
