ty. No one is exempt from the oblig-
ation to support the community, no
matter how limited the person's
assets, and wealth may not be used
to elevate one's self in the religious
life of the community.
Nonetheless, we also are reminded
that this minimal half shekel does
not fulfill all of one's communal
obligations. The fact that only a half
shekel is to be paid serves as a
reminder that this contribution is
but a portion of an individual's
obligation to the community.
It is significant that only those

half shekel. These contributors were
the Israelites who were doomed to
die in the wilderness; they would not
be permitted to enter the promised
land. Their contributions to the
community institutions were not for
their own benefit, but rather for
their descendants. It was an invest-
ment in their future. It is like the
parable of the old man who plants a
sapling, despite the knowledge that
he will die long before the tree bears
fruit. When asked why he bothers
Planting, he replies, "I inherited a
fruitful world because someone
planted for me. Now I plant for oth-
ers, so they, too, will inherit a fruit-
ful world."
The values that underlie the com-
mandment to support the building
of the Tabernacle are as important
today as in ancient days. They can
provide guidance for our own contri-
butions and priorities in the 21st
century. May we all contribute our
half shekel for the welfare of our
community and for our future. ❑
