KERI GUTEN COHEN Story Development Editor U O Jr ewish family camping in Michigan will reach a new level with the opening this summer of the Grand Resort. Located on Mullett Lake, 30 miles from Charlevoix and Mackinac Island, the 18- acre waterfront property was a gift from Stephen and Nancy Grand of Bloomfield Hills. The resort is held by the United Jewish Foundation (UJF) of Metropolitan Detroit and operated by the Fresh Air Society under a family-camping endowment by Michael and Donna Maddin of West Bloomfield. Formerly known as Silver Lodge, the resort was started in the 1930s. It was built on a beautiful white sand beach on the western shore of Mullett Lake and was used continuously by several generations of the same families. . The resort was acquired by Stephen Grand in the early 1990s as a- vacation getaway for employees of the. family business, Deco-Grand Inc., an automotive supplier. During the off-seasons, clients from JARC (Jewish Association for Residential Care), Kadima and similar non-Jewish agencies used the property for client retreats. "We would get letters from individuals saying how they looked forward to coming," Grand said. When the business was sold in 1998, the Grands retained ownership of the resort. They wished to provide ongoing access to JARC and Kadima clients, so they began talking about options with Penny Blumenstein, president, and Robert Aronson, chief executive officer, of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, and David Harold, president of the Fresh Air Society.
