Israeli Arab
Is Sentenced
Miami
A jury in Florida ruled
against an Orthodox Jewish pharma-
cist who alleged discrimination in a
federal suit brought against a drug-
store chain that fired him after he
refused to sell condoms ro customers.
The jury ruled on Feb. 11 that the
Eckerd Corp. could not reasonably
accommodate Hillel Hellinger, 41, a
Chasidic Jew with nine children, with-
out hurting customer service.
Hellinger had sought unspecified
damages for mental anguish, S 100,00
in back wages and the part-time job
he lost in 1995.
Hellinger testified his only restric-
tions were against working on
Shabbat and selling condoms because
doing so would violate his religious
beliefs. Eckerd attorney Susan Dolin
said Hellinger exaggerated his beliefs
and twisted anti-discrimination law.
She said Eckerd has hired other
Orthodox Jews as pharmacists.
Jerusalem (JTA) — An Israeli court
sentenced an Israeli Arab to two con-
secutive life terms for the murder last
August of two Jewish hikers.
Abdullah Igbariya, 21, pleaded guilty
to stabbing to death Sharon Steinmetz,
21, and Yehiel Funfter, 26, after having
decided "to kill Jews."
The court found that Igbariya
stabbed the couple "repeatedly all
over their bodies until they died,"
stripped them of their belongings
and hid the corpses near a stream.
The court said Igbariya expressed no
regret for his actions, which were
part of a plot to steal their car for a
bomb attack inside Israel.

Jerusalem (JTA) — The number of
people emigrating from Western
nations to Israel declined last year,
according to the Jerusalem Post.
In 1999, 1,323 Americans made
aliya, a 15 percent decline from the
year before. Aliya from the United
States is at its lowest point since
1968. The paper quoted an official
with the Jewish Agency for Israel.
Jerusalem — Hadassah has awarded
the Jewish National Fund $3 mil-
lion to help build reservoirs to cap-
ture winter rains in the
wake of a severe water
shortage in Israel.
"Water is the most
precious resource in the
Middle East and is one
of the major issues in
the peace negotiations,"
said Bonnie Lipton,
Hadassah president.
"Despite recent rains,
there is still a severe
water crisis in Israel
because a large part of
the rainwater was
washed away and there
is inadequate means for
capturing and storing
new rainfall," said
Ronald Lauder, JNF
president.
