CAJE taps Temple Israel's
Fran Pearlman to head its
25th annual forum.

DIANA LIEBERMAN
Staff Writer

F

ran Pearlman, director of educa-
tion at Temple Israel, will be at
the helm when CAJE, the Coalition
for the Advancement of Jewish
Education, holds its 25th annual con-
ference this summer.
The event is also called CAJE,
which, in this case, stands for the
Conference on Alternatives in Jewish
Education. Scheduled for Aug. 13-17
at Hofstra University in Hempstead,
N.Y., it is expected to attract about
2,000 educators from all streams of
Judaism, Pearlman said.
The conference will feature both a
retrospective and a "futurespective," she
said. "We plan to look not only at where
we have come in the last 25 years, but- -
what the next 25 years will look like,
both for CAJE and
for Jewish education
as a whole."
Among the high-
lights of the 2000
conference is a lab
school, where master
teachers will conduct
classes with real stu-
Fran Pearlman:
dents to demonstrate
CAJE leader
how it's done. Text
study and Torah lishma will co-exist
with the fine arts and folk dancing.
Pearlman has been Temple Israel's
education director for eight years. She
has been a member of the CAJE board
for 12 of its 25 years. As conference
chair, she leads a nationally based
mazkirut, planning committee, of
CAJE members.
This year, the committee is making a
special effort to expand conference offer-
ings to interest more early childhood
and day school educators than in the
past. Presenters have been actively
recruited in these areas, and the schedule
will include suggested kivunim, or paths
of learning, to make it easier for partici-
pants to find workshops that will meet
these and other special interests. ❑
