T
oo many sites on the World
Wide Web put graphical
glitz over content. And oth-
ers have plenty of content
— but are so poorly packaged that a
visit is a prescription for eyestrain.
Leah Berkowitz's "Jewish-American
History . on the Web" site is different.
Berkowitz offers a dazzling collection
of information on her favorite subject.
But the material is organized for easy
browsing and filled with attractive pic-
tures that add to the content. The
result is more like an online coffee-
table book than the usual homepage
hodgepodge.
The homepage is an update of
Berkowitz's excellent "Walnut Street"
site on American Jewish history.
The "What's New" section has
enough to keep most visitors busy
for weeks.
An example: see the article on the
restoration of the Beth Chaim ceme-
tery in the Yukon Territories, a labor
of love for some Canadian Jews.
From
revolution to the
Wild West,
Jews have
been there
There's a poem about the assassina-
tion of Abraham Lincoln, written by a
young Emma Lazarus, and an 1861
article about famous women in Jewish
history.
