ncreased fund raising on behalf of
Michigan State University's
Jewish Studies Program has
allowed the hiring of an addition-
al faculty member and expansion of
public programming in Israeli studies.
These innovations are only part of
the big picture, said MSU President
Peter McPherson. Visiting the Jewish
News offices last month with several
faculty and staff members, McPherson
reiterated his commitment to building
a quality program in many areas of
Jewish studies.
Achieving change in an institution
the size and complexity of MSU will
take time, McPherson said.
"When you're working with a col-
lege campus, it's not enough to say
`This is what you are going to do,'" he

explained. "Instead, change is brought
about by a series of big and little
actions that together change the cul-
ture and tone."
MSU's most recent estimates place
the number of its Jewish undergradu-
ates at about 2,000, out of 33,259.
The university does not ask students
their religion, but teachers estimate
that Jewish Studies courses draw about
50 percent of their enrollment from
the non-Jewish population.
So far, there's no major in Jewish
Studies, but undergraduates can earn a
specialization in the area by complet-
ing a minimum of 20 credits in Jewish
Studies, offered by eight different acad-
emic departments. MSU also offers
cooperative programs at three Israeli
universities, including Ben-Gurion
University in Beersheva, where stu-
dents can receive a certificate in
Hebrew Studies.
But the Jewish Studies
Program is more than a series of
academic courses. Holocaust
education and activities that pro-
mote understanding of American
and Israeli Jewish culture in the
community as a whole are its
other goals
Most recently, MSU alumnus
Michael Serling and his wife,
Elaine, contributed $100,000
toward the community outreach
arm of the program. The gift
establishes an endowment for the
Michael and Elaine Serling Fund
for Israel Study at Michigan
State University, which will sup-
port speakers, films, programs
