"Everyone, especially one team of
sheriff's deputies, wanted to beat us."
To amuse the local crowds, Grund's
daughter Judy did trick basketball
shots at half-time and Patty sang the
national anthem and performed acro-
batic dancing. This led to an 18-year
singing career for Ceresnie, who
became known as Patty Grant and
sang with the former Dick Stein
Orchestra and other bands.
We also had fun back home, act-
ing out all of our father's wrestling
holds, boxing with each other, and
driving our friends crazy by letting
them use trick balls in pickup basket-
ball games," said Ceresnie.
Grund retired from sports promot-
ing in the 1960s and became a sport-
ing goods representative.
The Black Legends of Professional
Basketball was formed in 1996 to
bring together the old black hoop
stars and raise money for inner-city
middle school basketball programs.
The Black Legends also mentor chil-
dren who are at high risk of dropping
out of school.
The founder and president is Dr.
John Kline, former star basketball.

rankings. "Jumping Johnny Kline" as
he was known then, was the forerun-
ner of today's jump-shot artists.
"I never knew Bobby Grund," said
Kline, "but Marques Haynes told
Patty and me that Bobby was the
smartest and best barnstormer ever.
He was liked and respected by all of
the players: and he deserves to finally
be recognized for his contributions to
the black basketball player."
A former Harlem Roadking, Bob
White, said, "If anyone deserves this
recognition, Bobby Grund does." El

The Black Legends of
Professional Basketball
Foundation recognition dinner
will be held 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb.
26, in Cobo Center. Other hon-
orees are George Gervin, Al
Attles, Ray Scott, Goose Tatum,
Don Barnette, Harry Sykes, Andy
Johnson and Dr. Bob Sims.
