Who Wrote The Bible?

Aish HaTorah held its flagship "Discovery"
program on Feb. 13 at its new Aish Center
in Birmingham. It drew by 20 community
members who heard a variety of presenta-
tions of "evidence" that the Bible could not
have been written by human beings. The
daylong event, featuring several speakers, was
the first major program to be held in the
new Aish Center on Old Woodward. Left,

Students Prepare For Scholarship

Seventeen of the
47 high school
juniors and
seniors entered
in the American
Arab and Jewish
Friends annual
scholarship essay
contest partici-
pated in a social
event Jan. 23 at
Whirlyball in
West Bloomfield.
The students
are paired into
essay teams and
will together
write on "My Culture, My Friend's
Culture and the Ties That Bind."
The essays will be completed in
early March and scholarship winners
will be announced in May.

Slates Talk

UD-Mercy
Student Group

The Greater Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah will end its Changes 2000
series with Anneke Burke-Kooistra,
a righteous gentile, who will speak
on "Perseverance of the Human
Spirit" at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March
13, at Hadassah House. A dairy din-
ner will be served.
Burke-Kooistra was 2 years old
when Germany invaded her native
Netherlands. Her parents successful-
ly hid eight Jews in their home from
1942 until liberation in 1945.

Hillel of Metro Detroit is forming a
new student group at University of
Detroit-Mercy. Students at UDM
will determine campus programs in
addition to community participation
with HMD.

Pet Volunteers
To Visit Homes

The Pet-A-Pet animal visitation pro-
gram at area nursing homes is seek-
ing additional volunteers.
Gentle pets are needed at Sinai-
Grace Rehabilitation Center at 4
p.m. on the first Sunday of each
month. Coordinator is Karen

Also seeking volunteers is West
Bloomfield Convalescent Center, 10
a.m. the fourth Saturday of each
month. Coordinator is Sandy Smith,

Hospital in Southfield, 10 a.m. the

Pets should be friendly, well-
behaved, and have current vaccina-

Havdala Planned
Under The Stars

The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit and Jewish
Experiences For Families will host
Havdala Under the Stars at 8 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Cranbrook
Institute of Science.
The program will include a
multi-media planetarium show, and
families will be able to make a
Havdala set to take home. Families
with children ages 4 and up are
invited. The cost is $2.50 per person
and reservations are required.

Bereavement
Group Forming

Space for Changing Families will
conduct an eight-week children's
bereavement group for children ages
5-16 beginning Monday, Feb. 21, at
the Space/NCJW office, Homestead
USA Building, 26400 Lahser Road,
Southfield.
Children meet in age-appropriate
groups to grieve, express and under-
stand their feelings and to receive
support while coping with the death
of a loved one. Parents or primary
adult caregivers will meet in an adult
support group.
The program will be from 5:45-7
p.m. Pre-registration is required. For

Endowment Gift
Is Recognized

The Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan presented a glass plaque to
Auburn Hills-based Guardian
Industries Corp. and William
Davidson, its chairman, in apprecia-
tion of the "Guardian" level gift to
the society's 21st Century Heritage
Council Endowment Fund.
The gift will endow the society's
Michigan Jewish History journal in the
names of Sarah and Ralph Davidson
and Bessie and Joseph Wetsman, par-
ents and grandparents of Mr.
Davidson and his sister, Dorothy
