CEO Jill Barad was one of only
four women to lead a Fortune 500
company. Seeing women in power-
ful positions provides role models
for the next generation, Parr says.
The second reason for the lack of a
female force in the professional world is
that, up until recently, men who were
less inclined to elevate women domi-
nated the non-profit boards. Now, there
are greater numbers of women with
Ell-time jobs, and men open to work-
ing with them, populating the boards
and management-search committees.
As the demographics of a board shifts,
there's a greater propensity to consider
all candidates, regardless of gender.
"Women are giving more dollars
than ever before," Parr adds. "They
have more power and more say."
Dina Shtull-Lieber is with Project
STaR, a social work program at the
University of Michigan that offers
training and education up to the mas-
ter's level for future Jewish communal
service workers. She sees an average of
about 10 students per year; the vast
majority are female. While the pro-
gram does not give specific instruc-
tion on encountering the so-called
"glass ceiling," it has held forums
addressing the topic with a panel of
professionals culled from the Detroit
Federation. Shtull-Lieber said her stu-
dents are highly sought after, regard-
less of their gender.

cent of those 53 to 63 years old.
"There are a lot of theories [as to
why men populated the boards so
heavily in the past]," says Landau.
"Some of it is tied to money, with
money translating to power and influ-
ence. Some of it is tied to the prestige
given to people who have achieved
professionally. Up until the last 20
years, those people were men.
"But the picture is different now
Women are achieving in corporate life
and moving up the ladder and do have
more power and influence and
money," she says.
Which is why it has never been
more important to recruit more
women, management adviser
Bronznick adds. According to the
Census Bureau, women control more
than 60 percent of the nation's
wealth, having most of the say in
everything from car purchases to phil-
anthropic donations. Because of this
gain in financial mobility, Jewish
communal groups should pro-actively
change the way they view women's
participation on boards and commit-
tees and recruit more women to hold
positions of leadership, lest they turn
them off altogether, Bronznick says.
"I feel that it is completely incor-
rect that anything this deep will recti-
fy itself. In fact, if we don't take some
pro-active steps, the opposite will
happen," she says. "Women who are

Q. . I see an item I'd like to bid on in your catalog but I will
be on vacation. How can I participate in the auction bidding?

But how can greater equity
be achieved? Will time cure
the disparity? Is it simply a
matter of awaiting a change
in the old, mostly male
guard for a younger, less
traditional one?
No, says Eve Landau,
executive director of
Ma'yan. While women are
entering higher spheres of
leadership, fewer women
have the time to devote to
volunteer causes. More
women hold full-time
jobs while also shoulder-
ing about two-thirds of
the child-care responsibil-
ities and housekeeping. In

bers included in the
