r*I.P, he recently released four-CD
boxed set Yes I Can! The
Sammy Davis Jr. Story (Warner
Archives/Rhino Recor&; $59.98)
pays tribute to one of the 20th cen-
tury's most celebrated entertainers.
The set features tracks from every
phase. of Davis' recording career,
chronicling his music from the late
'40s through the '70s.
Hits like "Hey There,"
"Something's. Gotta Give," "Love
Me or Leave Me," "That Old Black
Magic" and "Too. Close for
Comfort" (all recorded for Decca in
the '50s); "What Kind of Fool Am
I?" "As Long As She Needs Me,"
"The Shelter of Your Arms" and
"I've Gotta Be Me(from Reprise in
the '60s); and "The Candy Man"
and "Mr. Bojangles" (from MGM in
the '70s) are all there. The fourth
disc features live-performance high-
lights, including the impressions for
which Davis was famous.
The accompanying CD book
includes many rare photos and
extensive liner notes which feature
three essays that tell the story of
Davis' life, discuss his artistry
and showmanship and set every-
thing in its proper social and
cultural perspective.
Particularly interesting is the
commentary on Davis' life as a
double minority = as both a black
and a Jew Here are some excerpts:
the mezuza and reluctantly confessed
that the only time he took it off was
right before that fateful car trip. As if
on cue, the next visitor was a
rugged-looking man who turned out
to be a local rabbi on hospital
rounds. Sammy grilled him for an
answer to the $64,000 question:
What should I do with my life? The
answer, of course, was that you
should spend your life doing some-
thing which will outlast it."

Sammy was interviewed by New York
DJ Barry Gray on his all-night radio
show ... It was the first time that
Sammy publicly announced, `I am a

read a joke in one of the columns
that said you were playing golf on
Long Island, and the pro asked you
for your handicap, and you told him,
`I'm a colored, one-eyed Jew Do I

• "In the dressing room, Sammy
noticed the mezuza hanging on
a chain around [Eddie] Cantor's
neck. As the show business icon
(30-plus years older than
Sammy) removed the mezuza
and placed it around his new
friend's neck, he explained its
significance as both a Jewish
amulet and the meaning of the
Hebrew scroll coiled inside from
the book of Deuteronomy. It was
the first time anyone had shared
any of Judaism's philosophy
with Sammy — "that every man
should have the freedom to face
God in his own way."
