We Condemn Syria's Denial of the Holocaust We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the publication of an editorial in the official Syrian government newspaper Tishrin calling the Holocaust "a myth" and saying that Israeli policies are worse than Nazi policies. The January 31, 2000 editorial, by Tishrin editor Mohamed Kheir al-Wadi, declared that Israel invented "the myth of the Holocaust" and "invents stories about the Holocaust and exaggerates it to astronomical levels" in order "to receive more money from Germany and other Western establishments" and to silence "anyone opposed to Zionism and its expansionist policies". The editorial claimed that Israel "keeps on committing against the Arabs crimes that are uglier than the ones committed by the old Nazis. The Nazis, for example, did not drive out a whole nation from their homeland and did not bury people alive, which is what the Zionists did." (Reuters, Jan. 31, 2000) Unfortunately, this is only the latest in a series of outrageous and offensive statements and actions by Syria concerning the Holocaust. Syrian government publications have repeatedly denied the Holocaust and claimed that Israeli policies are similar to, or worse than, the policies of the Nazis. In addition, after the Holocaust, Syria gave shelter to numerous Nazi war criminals, and to this day harbors the most-wanted Nazi war criminal in the world, Alois Brunner. We call upon Syrian President Hafez al-Assad to publicly denounce the Tishrin editorial; to replace Tishrin editor Mohamed Kheir al-Wadi, who wrote the editorial; to take steps to ensure that Syrian government publications in the future refrain from denying or distorting the Holocaust; and to surrender for prosecution all Nazi war criminals presently being sheltered in Syria.
