I CALLED MOM FOR LUNCH ON TUESDAY, BUT SHE WAS GOING TO A BOOK REVIEW IN THE LIBRARY. I DROPPED BY ON THURSDAY, BUT SHE COULDN'T COME Jewish Community Teams With Detroit The Detroit Jewish community will sponsor a City Year Detroit Team at the Northwest Neighborhood Empowerment Center (NHEC)/Adams Butzel Recreation Center, a Detroit Jewish Initiative pro- ject facility. An Americorps program, City Year is a national youth service organization that unites diverse young people, ages 17-24, for a year of full-time commu- nity service, leadership development and civic engagement. Corps members serve as catalysts for social change in urban communities. They participate in formal leadership development and essential skills training. For their work, corps members receive a weekly stipend of $1,650 and health coverage; they are eligible for a $4,725 post-service award to be used for educational pursuits. The NHEC City Year is being facili- tated by. the Detroit Jewish Initiative, a joint project of the Jewish Community Council and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. Jerry Knoppow is the Initiative chair of City Year Detroit. The Initiative is seeking to recruit team members from the Jewish community for the 2000-2001 corps. A community-based health initiative that takes a holistic view of health and encourages healthy lifestyles, NHEC is located in the geographic area once served by DMC-Sinai Hospital. NHEC City Year Team members have a variety of assignments including: mentoring and tutoring in Clinton and Crary elementary schools; assisting University of Detroit nursing students at NHEC in developing health educa- tion/prevention programs; creating after-school programs for tutoring, edu- cation on teen pregnancy/prevention and domestic violence; and staffing recreation programs. The Jewish corn- munity will be asked to volunteer with the team on a number of daylong ser- vice projects. The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit has committed $100,000 a year for three years, becom- ing one of the six "founding team" sponsors for City Year Detroit. This commitment has been made possible by contributions from the United Jewish Foundation and the Jewish Fund. The other corporate sponsors of City Year Detroit are Bank One, Blur Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, Comerica Inc., DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund and Henry Ford Health System/Health Alliance Plan. BECAUSE SHE WAS BUSY IN THE ACTIVITIES ROOM WORKING ON HER NEW EXERCISE PLAN. I INVITED MYSELF TO LUNCH WITH HER ON FRIDAY, AND THE FOOD WAS TERRIFIC. I TOLD MOM TO CALL MY BROTHER AND LET HIM KNOW HOW SHE LIKES HER NEW HOME AT THE HEATHERWOOD. I HOPE SHE CAN FIND TIME TO CALL.
