celebrating with me. Aunts and uncles
were invited and nearly everyone
came.
On Sunday, Dec. 5, Gutsu arrived
at our home nervous, yet excited. She
was afraid of saying or doing some-
thing wrong. A woman who had
stood on a world stage wasn't sure she
could handle Chanuka.
She enjoyed her first potato latka
and blintz and, for the first time, she
lit the Chanuka candles while my
family recited the blessings.
Afterwards, we read a humorous
story and played dreidel. Gutsu
smiled, laughed, and fit in like she
had always celebrated the holiday. As
her fears were dispelled, she began to
actively participate.
She only planned to stay a short
while, yet was the last person to leave.
It was the first time that she had a
permanent expression of absolute joy.
A life of mistrust had led her to be
skeptical, yet this night she let go, cel-
ebrating her first Jewish holiday. 111
