Bach's Goldberg Variations
Wednesday, February 1 6 8 P.M.

Phoebe Snow and Gloria Steinem.
Last November, she held a work-
shop at Columbia University in New
York, instructing students from hun-
dreds of college campuses across the
country on how to present The
Vagina Monologues at their respective
schools for V-Day 2000..
"I couldn't be thinking about liber-
ating women without thinking about
their vaginas," said Ensler, who was
looking for a physiological connec-
tion for her work about women.
Though the 40-something Ensler
has left her successful New York run
of The Vagina Monologues at the
Westside Theatre to work on a book,
a succession of actresses is set to per- .
form the piece beginning Feb. 8.
Currently scheduled are Julie Kavner,
Swoosie Kurtz and Audra McDonald,
Feb. 8-20; Mary Alice, Amy Irving
and Rosie Perez, Feb. 22-March 5;
Rita Moreno, Cynthia Nixon and
Mario Thomas, March 7-19; and
Shirley Knight, Andrea Martin and
Alanis Morissette, March 21-April 2.
The 1999 recipient of the
Guggenheim Grant in Playwriting,
Ensler's most recent projects include
writing a screenplay on women in
prison for Glenn Close.
Her best-selling book, also called
The Vagina Monlogues, was published
by Villard Books, and her new book,
Points of Reentry, will be published by
Villard in 2001.
Ensler's other works for the stage
include The Depot, Floating Rhoda
and the Glueman, Extraordinary
Measures, Conviction, Lemonade and
Ladies and Scooncat.
Meryl Streep, Angelica Huston and
Cherry Jones appeared on Broadway
in Ensler's Necessary Targets to benefit
Bosnian women refugees. The play
was subsequently performed at the
Kennedy Center in Washington,
D.C., to honor Hillary Clinton. ❑
