Glazer Institute Hosts Dr. Ellenson

Dr. David Ellenson will be scholar-in-
residence Friday, Feb. 11, for Temple
Beth El's 58th annual Rabbi B. Benedict
Glazer Institute on Judaism for
Christian, Eastern Orthodox, Muslim
and Protestant clergy.
The Glazer Institute
originated in 1942
when Rabbi Glazer,
the temple's senior
rabbi, invited a small
group of ministers to
hear a lecture on

rabbi's memory follow-
ing his death in 1952, the institute con-
tinues to provide a setting for scholarly
presentations and shared concerns.
Dr. Ellenson is the I.H. and Anna
Grancell Professor of Jewish Religious
Thought at the Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion in Los
Angeles. He most recently was a fellow
at the Shalom Hartman Institute in
Jerusalem and earlier at Hebrew
University in Jerusalem, the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America,
UCLA and the Jerusalem Pardes
Institute for Jewish Studies.
The professor lectures on modern
Jewish history, ethics and thought. Using
a sociological approach, Dr. Ellenson
illuminates the history and development
of modern Jewish movements, emphasiz-
ing the interplay between religious tradi-
tion and modern society.
He is also the author of Tradition in-

Transition: Orthodoxy, Halacha and the
Boundaries of Modern Jewish Identity,
Rabbi Esriel Hildesheimer and the
Creation of Modern Jewish Orthodoxy.
Dr. Ellenson will address Glazer
Institute participants at 9:30 a.m. on
"Talmudic Sources, Medieval
Developments" and speak on "Modern
Issues" at 10:45 a.m.
He will speak at the 8 p.m. Shabbat
services on 'Abraham Joshua Heschel
and Tikkun Olam: A Message of
Enduring Worth." At 10:30 a.m. ser-
vices Saturday, Dr. Ellenson's topic is
"One Rabbi's Approach to the Jewish
Faith: A Personal View."

Hosts Cantor

Cantor Lori Corrsin of Temple Israel
presents a program on "The
Importance of Music in Jewish Life,"
accompanied by Andrea Trivax, as part
of the Greater Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah's "Changes 2000" series. A
dairy lunch will be served at the event,
which begins 11:30 a.m. Monday,
Feb. 7, at Hadassah House.
The final program in the series will
feature Anneke Burke-Kooispra, a
righteous gentile, speaking 6:30 p.m.
March 13 at Hadassah House. Cost is
