Candle Of The Night
Recited over a cup on wine andfiagrant spices
Behold, God is my deliverance: I will trust,
and will not be afraid; truly the Lord is my strength
and my song; He has delivered me indeed.
Joyfully shall you thaw upon the fountains of deliverance.
It is for the Lord to bring help; my God, thy blessing be upon thy people.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our Stronghold.
Lord of hosts, happy is the man who trusts in thee.
0 Lord, serve us;.may the King answer us when we call.
The Jews had light and joy, gladness and honor.
So be it with us. I will take the cup of deliverance,
and I will call upon the name of the Lord.
The blessing is said over the wine, but it is not drunk.
Blessed art thou, Lord our God, King of the universe,
who createst the fruit of the vine.

PARAMOUNT
The blessing is said over the spices, and as the spice box is passed around to be smelled by all
Blessed
art thou, Lord our God, King of the universe,
who createst various kinds of spices.
The blessing over the flame is recited and the custom is to extend hands toward the light,
to see the light reflected in our fingernails,
symbolizing the division between light and dark, holy and profane.
Blessed art thou, Lord our God,
King of the universe, who createst the lights of fire.
A final prayer of separation recognizing Shabbat as a special day of holiness is then recited
Blessed art thou, Lord our God, King of the universe,
who hast made a distinction between the sacred and the profane,
between light and darkness, between Israel and the other nations,
between the seventh day and the six working days.
Blessed art thou, 0 Lord,
who hast made a distinction between the sacred and the profane.
The cup of wine is then passed for all to drink,
with a few drops poured into a dish and the candle extinguished in the wine,
or by dipping the candle in the cup itself
It is then customary to wish everyone a shavua toy (good week.)

On Jan. 29, Congregation B'nai
Moshe presented the second of two
family-oriented Havdala programs
held over the past 2 1 /2 months. It
incorporated Israeli folk dancing,
singing, a learning session on the
symbols of the ceremony and the
making of Havdala. Andie Simons of
West Bloomfield was one of 90 indi-
viduals who attended the program,
which was an introduction to the
evening's Israel Night. Havdala is
made each Saturday night at B'nai
Moshe, regardless of whether there is
special programming.
Simons described the experience of
being part of a group standing
together in a circle singing Debbie
Friedman's Birchot Havdala, with the
beauty of 30 candles in the dimly lit
room. For her, it was a "spiritual
experience, ending Shabbat the way it
began — with candles."
Non-Traditional Havdala
In recent years, Havdala has gone
beyond the dining room and syna-
gogue to Web sites. One of them,
the Jewish Identity Info Line, offers
