The IRS issued a ruling last year that lets
taxpayers choose to deduct points paid on a
home mortgage either in full in the year the home
is purchased or pro rata over the life of the loan.
So if you miss the deduction the year you pur-
chase because you don't itemize, you can spread
the deduction out over later years when your mort-
gage interest gives you enough deductions to itemize.
