From the time of protagonist
Hannah Felber's birth, she basks in
the glow of her mother Celia's devo-
tion. But when Hannah leaves for col-
lege, Celia inexplicably shuts her out
of her life, refusing to answer letters
or calls.
Hannah loses both her closest con-
fidante and her sense of identity. She
searches through old photographs and
listens to family legends
for clues to who she is and
where she comes from. In
chapters narrated by her
maternal ancestors —
some from beyond the
grave — Hannah begins to
