nsraorr JEWISH NEWS A Michigan Press Association Newspaper of the Year It was a broiling summer day, but Dr. Milton Shiffman seemed as collected as ever in telling about his passion for supporting Jewish education. We were marching in the ded- ication parade for the new Yeshivat Akiva. "Jewish educa- tion," he said, "is key to who we are as a people. And it starts, it starts, with the kids." He and his wife Lois knew we needed to hook children early if we were going to sustain ewish identity through the generations. But hey also knew family income sometimes stood n the way. Which is why they created the ► hiffman Family Day School Tuition Assistance Fund, one of the Detroit Jewish community's jewels. Dr. Shiffman died this week at age 71; his obituary, written by Editorial Assistant David S achs, appears on page 131. His memory will live on in the sustenance our day school stu- dents draw from learning Jewishly. *s" January 28, 2000 This Week °= 14 Accessible Education We, Leart,1: Hillel's new tuition plan reduces costs for middle-income families. 20 Presidential Piety Assessing candidates' views on religion.
