heritage.
Major League Baseball's newest multi-
millionaire recently left the Toronto Blue
Jays, enticed by a six-year, $84 million con-
tract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Another enticement is his Jewish heritage.
One of the stipulations of his trade talks with
the Blue Jays was a baseball city with a significant
Jewish population.
He told Sports Illustrated's Michael Bamberger in
December, "Growing up, we knew we were Jewish,
but we didn't do anything with it. I've learned
more about my religion in the five years that
I've been in the majors than in the 21 years
before that."
He said Jewish communities in the
major league cities made him feel welcome. "It was a great feeling to know
that so many- kids were looking up to me just because I was Jewish," he told
Bamberger.
Green said it is unlikely that he would play on Yom Kippur if he ever had
the chance, not for religious reasons but to make a statement.
