The Best Of Everything

Grammy awards ...
Fire closing the 24
Karat Club on
Telegraph.
IN 1621, any
French innkeeper
was liable to arrest
and imprisonment if
a patron complained
of a stomach ache after eating ... (What
a way to get out of paying a check!)
WHAT A DELIGHTFUL way to
have dinner ... As many discovered at
the Opera House Restaurant on Warren
... to the music from "Old Man River"
to "Pagliacci" in an evening of charm.
IN THE HANDS of a real pro like
Myron Cohen, the fine art of dialect
had survived ... When he was here at
the Michigan Palace, dialect King
Cohen liked telling about the two part-
ners in the cloak and suit business who
were having an argument ... The senior
partner saying, "You're so crooked that
the wool you're pulling over my eyes is
50 percent cotton" ... And the one
about the two Jewish women in
Brooklyn who were talking ... "If I live,
I'll see you Wednesday —if not,
Thursday."
WHEN CHARLIE DUBIN was
piano stylist at Darbys on West Seven
Mile, he drove his car into a•pole ... The
insurance company took one look at it
and gave him a new auto ... it was so
completely demolished ... Charlie lucid-
ly escaped without a scratch ... And that
night his many-times-played song was
"Heaven Can Wait."
IN 1971, Sammy Lieberman was
host to a "New Year's Eve in July" in the
biggest Dodge car announcement in
history ... 3,000 dealers and their wives
from all over the country were feted at
the Raleigh House and entertained by
George Kirby, Shari Lewis and the Four
Freshmen.
PALOMBO's ON West Eight Mile
Road, between Evergreen and Lahser,
was one of those consistent types of
eateries ... Food, service and congeniali-
ty were conducive to a good evening ...
Owners Ernie and Francis Palombo
knew their Italian and American food,
and were noted for advising what to eat
... Today, Ernie is still a host ... at
Ginopolis' on the Grille, 12 Mile and
Middlebelt ... plus still telling folks who
ask of the good things to eat.
THE FAMILY BUGGY on West
McNichols and Evergreen had an
emphasis on "big smiles for everyone"
... including a lapel button of a smiling
face for folks to wear.
