altogether [pleased] with the tone of
the news coverage. I think that a lot
of it was off the point. I think that,
especially locally, there's been a fixa-
tion on the drinking aspect of
Courtney's death and almost no
attention paid to the safety aspect
with regard to the condition of her
room and the loft.
It annoys me that the Free Press
would have done a major front page
piece on binge drinking on campus at
the University of Michigan and use
Courtney as their prime example
because there's absolutely no evidence
that Courtney was ever engaged in
any binge drinking.
As somebody who generally writes
the news and now is being reported

think they should be doing more.
There should be programs put in
place for all freshmen.
I think it goes without saying that
the rooms should be safe, and I think
the University of Michigan has react-
ed belatedly to this.
What I would really like to see
happen is for many universities to
adopt the example being set at
Indiana University and not permit
freshman rush, to delay rush for fra-
ternities and sororities into the sopho-
more year so that the entering fresh-
men have a chance to get their feet on
the ground, become accustomed to
college life and understand some of
the pressures that are going to be put
on them by their peers.

JN: Do you think CBS's 48 Hours,
which featured you in their program
on binge drinking, gave you fair cov-
erage?
GC: I think 48 Hours did a fair job.
When they first wanted to talk to us,
they thought they were going to be
doing a binge-drinking story.
Through conversations, they under-
stood that [ours] was a different kind
of story, and I think they tempered
their story very well.

JN: What responsibilities do you
think universities have regarding stu-
dent safety and drinking?
GC: Certainly, I think they should be
doing more on the educational front
with entering freshmen, giving more
notice of both drinking and date-rape
drugs that are prevalent on campus. I
think that after the fact, some univer-
sities have started doing that, but I

JN: Do you have a message for par-
ents?
GC: I cannot stress to parents too
strongly to try to go over the situa-
tions their children might face as
freshmen in college, especially from
the aspect of peer pressure. The pres-
sure to drink is enormous, and it
should be addressed by both parents
and universities.

you during your immediate time of
loss?
GC: My family belongs to Temple
Israel, and we have [been members]
for many years. Their support dur-
ing the past year and a half has just
been phenomenal. The clergy and
the minyan group that we attended
every morning made the impossible
situation bearable. If anything, the
experience that I have gone through
has probably deepened my religious
commitment and has brought me
back to the roots of my belief in
Judaism. ❑
