formerly called London's ... Yes, at the
same time, Abe Boesky did own the
Blaine Delicatessen on Linwood and
Blaine ... and Lou's Delicatessen near
Pingree, was owned by Lou Loewy.
CUSTOMER LOYALTY was
exemplified in many ways by those
who were regulars at Angel's Hour
Glass, owned by Angel and Hank
Panek, on West McNichols, west of
Southfield ... One time, a fellow took
a fancy to one of the large ashtrays
there and Angel gave it to him for his
apartment ... But all was not so
smooth for the gift-getter ... holding
the ashtray and entering his car in the
parking lot, he was suddenly
beseeched by.customers Selma Chase,
Lee Jaffee and Esther Miller, who
promptly marched him back ... It was
after 2 a.m., so they banged on the
door until Angel came and opened it
... while the angry gals screeched, "He
stole your ashtray and better give it
back or else!" ... The poor man plead-
ed with Angel to tell them she had
given to it to him ... When Angel did,
Selma, Lee and Esther told her not to
stick up for the "thief" ... Angel finally
convinced them to let the man go.
ONLY PLACE we knew of here-
abouts that served true Szechuan dishes
like Scallion Lamb, Sliced Lamb and
Diced Lamb ... in hot spicy sauce ...
was House of Hunan, 12 Mile east of
Northwestern Hwy. ... It was all lamb ...
no vegetables or bean sprouts ... Owner
Joe Chue used to work as chef at House
of human in New York, noted for these
dishes.
WHEN IT FIRST opened in 1982,
a promotion read, "Greektown Comes
to Southfield" ... A few operators of the
famed downtown Detroit sector object-
ed to this line of advertising.
It was ultimately dropped ... with the
steady flow of rapidly growing cus-
tomers maintaining that many eateries
in Greektown wished they were as good
as Dimitri's of Southfield, on Southfield
Road, just north of 10 Mile.
Seating was for 290 in three rooms
... each separated by brick walls with
arches ... One of the rooms, with a bar
and dining area, was formerly the lower
level of King's Arms, Landing and
Sultan's Table.
A common occurrence was seeing
owner Dimitri "Jimmy" Syros take peo-
ple on an inspection tour of his kitchen
during rush hours.
If Dimitri hadn't changed his
types of cuisine so much ... and did-
n't have others run the place for him
... he might have had the most suc-
cessful Greek restaurant in the north-
west area. ❑
