Not Just Trees

What better time to update the changing role
of the Jewish National Fund — the American
arm of Keren Kayemet L'Israel, Israel's venera-
ble guardian of the land — than Tu b'Shevat,
the Jewish New Year for Trees?
In today's cover story on pages 6-11, special
writer Bill Carroll, working with Associate
Editor Alan Hitsky, revisits how natural
resource and infrastructure improvements,
especially in the wake of a daunting water
shortage, are now companions to woodlands
development in Israel. In a companion package
(pages 67-72), AppleTree Editor Elizabeth
Applebaum tells about Tu b'Shevat and offers
plenty of ideas for celebrating this joyous day
on the Jewish calendar.
