chairman, William Davidson, should
underwrite the journal in honor of
his parents and grandparents," said
JHS's Judy Levin Cantor, the publi-
cation's former editor. "These two
families each exercised dynamic
leadership and thus made lasting
contributions to the history of
Jewish Detroit."
Successfully moving his family
from Iowa to Michigan, Joseph
Wetsman served twice as president
of Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
the early years of the 20th century.
The Wetsmans' daughter, Sarah
Wetsman Davidson, a 1908 graduate
of Central High School and secre-
tary to Shaarey Zedek's Rabbi
Abraham Hershman, worked with
Henrietta Szold to form Detroit's
first chapter of Hadassah.
The headquarters of Greater
Detroit Chapter of Hadassah in
West Bloomfield is named the Sarah
and Ralph Davidson Hadassah
House.

Primary Voting
Si gnup Out

The Jewish Community Council's
government relations committee is
disseminating information on the
primary and caucuses in Michigan.
Michigan Republicans will choose a
presidential candidate in the Feb. 22
primary; anyone registered to vote by
Jan. 24 can participate. Voters do not
need to declare that they are
Republicans in order to vote.
Michigan Democrats will hold
caucuses on March 11. Voters may
participate by showing up and
declaring they are Democrats.
The county Democratic Party
chairmen have the information on the
location of caucus sites. The Oakland
County party chairman is Gary
Kohut, (248) 584-0510; the Wayne
County party chairman is Patrick
McCrae, (313) 323-7335. Because the
caucuses are being held on Saturday,
Shabbat, the party is providing for a
vote by mail. The applications are
available from the party by calling
(517) 371-5410 or by writing to
Michigan Democratic Party, 606
Townsend, Lansing, MI 48933.
Applications must be returned to
the party office by March 3. A ballot
will then be mailed out. It must be
completed and returned to the party
by March 10.
Jim Alexander and Maxine
Berman lead the JCCouncil's gov-
ernment relations committee.

TV Documentary
Focuses On Prayer

The Jewish Theological Seminary pro-
duced a TV documentary on prayer that
is now available on video.
Titled Mode Ani PFanecha, Grateful
Am I to You, the opening liturgical
phrase in the morning service, the video
is a way to explore
prayer in the privacy
of one's own home.
The special begins
with Detroiter Marci
Tilchin, .daughter of
Asher and the late
Jeanette Tilchin, serv-
ing as chazzan. The
Rabbi Herbert 1976 graduate of
Yoskowitz
Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit
in Farmington Hills is in the midst of
her dual career program of becoming
both cantor and rabbi.
Rabbi Herbert Yoskowitz of Adat
Shalom Synagogue, in New York for a
special rabbinic program sponsored by
the JTS, is interviewed on his personal
understanding of the capability of prayer
to change lives.
In the documentary, a new genera-
tion demonstrates and describes the
power of prayer. Viewers are invited to
learn not only the structure of the
morning service, but also how it can
establish a balance in their life. The spe-
cial includes personal stories of how sup-
plications have drawn individuals closer
to God, transforming their wily rou-
tines and relationships.
This video is part of a series of annual
liturgical specials produced with the
Interfaith Broadcasting Commission.
They are designed to strengthen an
awareness of Judeo-Christian principles,
demonstrate the variety of ways in
which faith can be expressed and inspire
individuals to explore how faith can
enrich their lives.
Videotapes are available through Tom
Wexelberg-Clouser at the Detroit JTS
office, (248) 258-0055.
