ou can say it's the bar mitz-
vah year for Southfield's
Martin Luther King Service
Recognition
Award, first given in
1988. All the more
appropriate then that
its 13th recipient is a
Jewish woman, one
who is affiliated with
Sholem Aleichem
Institute and its former
Lillian
school, as well as
Jaffe
Oaks
belonging to Hadassah,
Women's American ORT, the National
Council of Jewish Women and the
American Jewish Committee.
Southfield resident Lillian Jaffe Oaks,
84, a councilwoman for the city from
1975-1983, and then an Oakland
County commissioner, said she was
``completely surprised" to be named for
the award. The announcement. came
from Councilwoman Barbara Talley, the
person Oaks had mentored to replace
her on the council.
Among the 1,200 present at the Jan.
17 MLK Day celebration at the
Southfield Civic Center were Oaks'
children, Linda Lax of West Bloomfield
and Stephen Jaffe of Birmingham, and
one of her four grandsons. Husband of
20 years, Samuel Oaks, who Lillian says
"supports everything I believe in," kept
the award a secret to keep the surprise.
"Mrs. Oaks has been an outstanding
advocate for human rights, particularly
in the area of affordable housing and
fair housing, said Patricia Haynie, presi-
dent of Southfield's MLK Jr. holiday
task force. "She has certainly been a
lighthouse in terms of advocating the
rights of all people. We are extremely
pleased to honor her."
Saying she was very proud to win
the award, Oaks added, "The Jewish
tradition has always helped other peo-
ple. I think part of Judaism is under-
standing people."
Oaks has been a member of her
Hadassah study group for 54 years,
with seven of the original 14 members
still participating.
Oaks, who has worked with
Michigan Gov. James Blanchard and
the U.S. congressional brothers of Sen.
Carl and Rep. Sander Levin, admitted
to still having a taste for politics.
``I loved it," she said. 'And I do miss
it, even at this stage of the game." ❑
