Sidney Bolkosky's book (Harmony &
Dissonance: Voices of Jewish Identity in
Detroit, 1914-1967) and his article in
the Jewish News ("A Century of Jewish
Detroit," Dec. 31) afford a vibrant view
of the century, and the Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan is to be commend-
ed for its distinguished work.
I wish to comment only about a few
things. My father, James I. Ellmann,
went with Philip Slomovitz, the editor
of the Jewish News at that time, to meet
with Father Charles Coughlin. This
points out a very important thing about
political action: All should work togeth-
er and not alone.
In passing, I regretfully see no men-
tion of my brother Richard Ellmann,
winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his work
on Oscar Wilde and Hied by Anthony
Burgess "the greatest biographer of the
century" He was schooled in Michigan
and graduated from Temple Beth El in
1936. In addition, my brother has
received the National Book Award for
his book on James Joyce, which has
been hailed. as one of the 100 best books
of the century. His work on William
Butler Yeats remains memorable as well.
Generally, the leadership of the Jew-
ish community did itself proud. We
must thank God that we have come into
this century relatively unscathed with
the leadership still intact and formida-
ble. I respectfully look forward to similar
leadership in the days ahead.
William M. Ellmann
