T

he Jewish Community '
Center in West Bloomfield
will be able to serve more
children in its child-care pro-
gram because of a "substantial" gift from
some longtime community supporters.
Irving Pitt, founder and principal
of Murray's Ace Hardware and
Murray's Discount
Auto Stores Inc.
and his wife,
Sarah, have given
an undisclosed
sum to expand the
preschool Child
Development
Center in the
Kahn Building of
the JCC.
"It's a successful
program and it's
ving and
well-received in the
Saint, Pitt
community, and it
serves education
for young children, which is one of
(my parents') interests," said their son,
Murray Pitt. "This is just going to
expand the program for more people
and make it a better, more efficient use
of the current space."
Expansion of the renamed Sarah
and Irving Pitt Child Development
Center will accommodate 250 chil-
dren. Enrollment how is limited to
150 because of space requirements
specified by state licensing regulations.
Construction of the two-level,
26,000-square-foot center is sched-
uled to begin in the fall, with plans
for a toddler gym; science, cooking ,
and computer labs; kitchen facilities;
and educational and play spaces.
Completion is planned for fall 2001.
Almost 75 percent of the young-
sters, from infants to age 4, are
enrolled in a full-day program.
"Five days a week, 52 weeks a year,
we provide a real service to working

parents," said Lawrence Wolfe, JCC
president. "With our academic and
extracurricular programming, the
Center offers a quality Jewish learning
environment for their children."
The gift was made to the Jewish -
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
Millennium Campaign for Detroit's
Jewish Future, a $50 million endeavor
to redevelop and transform the JCC as
the focus for informal Jewish educa-
tion and to expand
and enrich Jewish
education through-
out the community.
So far, $40.8 mil-
lion has been raised
in the fund, with
about $25.8 million
earmarked for the
Center.
The Pitts of
Farmington Hills are
benefactors of
Temple Israel,
Kadima, B'nai
Youth Oiganization
and Jewish National Fund.
In regard to the couple's gift to the
JCC, Penny Blumenstein, Federation
president, said: "I can't think of a bet-
ter investment in our community's
future. Young children who are
exposed to the beauty and joy of
Jewish life in a day-care setting never
forget their wonderful, formative
experiences. Equally important, they
share that joy with their parents and
siblings. So the entire family — and
the entire community — benefit."

Correction

In the Eilu Eilu story on page
64 of the Jan. 14 issue, Beth
Horwitz led the Jan. 9 morning
service with Susan Krakoff lead-
ing the evening service. A list of
Eilu v' Eilu Rosh Chodesh prayer
service dates has inaccurate
evening service dates. The morn-
ing service information is correct.
Call Nancy Kaplan for evening
dates at (248) 737-1931.
