Rabbi Marc Schneier: "There is so much

L
ong before there was a holi-
day to celebrate the birthday
of Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr., Rabbi Marc Schneier cel-
ebrated the work of the civil rights
leader. Now, the rabbi does so in more
depth and with an emphasis on issues
he confronts every day.
Schneier, founding leader of New
York's Hampton Synagogue and presi-
dent of the Foundation for Ethnic
Understanding, has written Shared
Dreams: Martin Luther King Jr. and
the Jewish Community (Jewish Lights
Publishing, $24.95). Besides detailing
the support King received from Jewish
Americans, he stresses the support the
Jewish community had from King.
"I chose to write this book because
I thought it was imperative to shed
new light on the commitment and
relations between the Jewish and
African American communities," says
Schneier, 40, who is devoting much of
his career to building bridges between
people of different viewpoints.
"We have struggled together to
fight for justice, civil rights and our
nation, and I think it's a very impor-
tant message that Dr. King, despite all
the pressures and constraints in his
primary role with the civil rights
movement, was an advocate for the
civil rights of the Jews."
Three main issues discussed by
Schneier involve King's concerns for
the safety and security of Israel, his
support for Soviet Jews and his con-
demnation of anti-Semitism, especially
