Winter Classes At The JCCs

Winter classes at the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit are starting.
The Jewish Life and Learning
Department at the Jimmy Prentis
Morris Building in Oak Park will offer
preschool, children, preteen, teen and
adult classes beginning the week of
Jan. 23.
Cooking with Chef Mimi will cen-
ter around traditional Jewish holiday
foods. Sessions will be Mondays
beginning Jan. 24 and run for seven
weeks. The 10:30-11:30 a.m. parent-
child class is for 3 1/2 to 5 year olds.
The cost is $50 for members and $65
for non-members. There is a $25
material fee paid at the time of regis-
tration.
Creative dance with Harriet Berg
introduces young children to basic
dance movement and rhythmic train-
ing. The first class is from 10:15-11
a.m. and is for 3 year olds. The 11:15-
noon class is for 4 to 5 year olds. Both
classes begin Tuesday, Jan. 25, and run
for seven weeks. The fee is $44 for
members and $58 for non-members.
"Song.and Movement with Sandy"
is designed to improve coordination
and develop musical skills. The class is
held Thursdays from 3-4 p.m. for
seven weeks. The fee is $44 for mem-
bers and $58 for non-members.
Kidzcraft with Jaqui Aronoff will
explore arts and crafts. The 10:30-
11:45 parent-child class is for 2'/2 to
31/2 year olds. The class is held
Thursdays beginning Jan. 27 and runs
for seven weeks. The fee is $55 for
members and $70 for non-members.
There is an additional $6 material fee
paid to the instructor. The last half-
hour of class will be gym with Lori.
Story hour with librarian Julie
Solomon is for 2'/2 to 4 year olds every
Friday from 10-10:30 a.m. There is no
charge for members and a $2 drop-in
fee for non-members.
Kindermusik is an introduction to
music for infants to 3 year olds.
Sessions will be held Tuesdays begin-
ning Jan. 25 for seven weeks. At
10:15-10:45 a.m. is a parent-child
class for infants to 18 months; the 11-
11:30 a.m. class is for 18 months to 3
years. The fee is $44 for members and
$58 for non-members.
"Movin' with Maureen and Coco"
is taught by Maureen Schiffman. Two
classes are being offered for 1 1 /2 to 3
year olds. The first class is 10 a.m.; the
second at 11 a.m. Both are on
Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 26, and

run for seven weeks. The last half-
hour of class will be gym with Lori.
The cost is $55 for members and $70
for non-members.
Belly dancing with instructor
Naomi Handelman for seven weeks
starts Wednesday, Jan. 26.
The class will run 7:30-8:30 p.m.
Wednesdays. The charge is $45 for
members and $59 for non-members.
Second- and third-graders can join
a class to read music and play a plastic
recorder. The first session will cover
three pitches.
The instructor will be Sandra Scott
Toms, choral director of children and
adult choirs at St. Lukes Episcopal
Church.
The class will run for seven weeks
beginning Thursday, Jan. 27, 4:15-
5:15 p.m. The cost is $44 for mem-
bers and $58 for non-members. There
is an $8.50 materials fee.
Marji Silk will teach a seven-week
photography class for adults starting
1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at JPM.
Silk is an international award-win-
ning fine arts photographer, exhibitor,
lecturer, juror and instructor.
The class costs $75 for members
and $89 for non-members.

JCC Conducts
Membership Drive

The Jewish Community Center winter
2000 membership drive is under way.
General members are entitled to
use the pools, tennis courts, walleyball
courts, tracks, gym and Olympic
weight room. Health Club members
can take advantage of the fitness cen-
ter, whirlpools, locker rooms, beauty
and barber shop, and massage.
Personal trainers and babysitters are
available at an extra charge.
JCC members get discounts on
classes and special events and receive a
monthly magazine, Centerline, to
inform them about upcoming events
such as holiday observances and fami-
ly programs.
Special membership rates will be
offered during January and February.
Reduced rates are available at both
JCC locations.

Bonds Honors
Local Couple

Seymour and Dee Brode of
Bloomfield Township are among 32
community leaders to receive the
PMC Silver Anniversary Award hon-
oring their service on behalf of the
State of Israel.
The award presentation will be
made Jan. 23 at the Israel Bonds
International Prime Minister's Club
dinner in Palm Beach, Fla.
This event marks the 25th
anniversary of the Prime Minister's
Club, an honor society of communi-
ty leaders who provide $25,000 or
more annually in investment funds
for Israel's economic development.
U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-
Conn.) will be the featured speaker.
David Ivry, Israel's newly appointed
ambassador to the United States,
will make his first formal address to
an American audience.
Bonds has previously honored
Brode with the Israel Peace medal
and Unity award; he is a past execu-
tive committee chair for Michigan.
A sports and fitness executive and
chairman of the Israel Tennis
Centers, which constructs tennis
courts in Israel for children, Brode is
involved in•building a bridge of
understanding between Palestinian
and Israeli youth through his organi-
zation Children's Sports for Peace.
The Brodes are members of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek.

Families Mark
Tu B'Shevat

Families will celebrate the environ-
ment and the New Year of the Trees
at a Tu b'Shevat seder 12:30 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 23, at the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield. Lunch will be served.
Hosts of the seder are the Jewish
Federation's Avenues group, serving
adults 35-50; Teva, Federation's
environment-oriented group;
Southeast Michigan Coalition on
the Environment and Jewish Life;
and Hillel of Metmpolitan Detroit.
Advance reservations at $5 per
person are required, but payment
may be made at the door.
Reservation deadline is Tuesday, Jan.
18.

Grant To Aid
In Hygiene

Impoverished Jewish families will
receive hygiene items like toothpaste
and soap, thanks to a communal
grant created with the proceeds of
Sinai Hospital's sale to the Detroit
Medical Center.
The Jewish Fund awarded Yad
Ezra, the Oak Park-based kosher
food bank, a $30,000 grant to pro-
vide healthcare/hygiene items to its
client base of 1,000 impoverished
families. Items include toothpaste,
shampoo, deodorant and soap.
Yad Ezra sought the funding
when research indicated that client
food stamps were being reduced
monthly by as much as 10 percent.

Y2K Supplies

Yad Ezra, Michigan's only kosher
food pantry, will accept canned food,
bottled juice and water that people
stockpiled in preparation for Y2K.
Donated food and water will be
distributed to the 1,000 client fami-
lies that Yad Ezra services every
month. Office hours for drop off are
Sunday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; Monday
and Wednesday, 8:45 a.m.-3:30
p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 8:45
a.m.-8 p.m.; and Friday, 8:45 a.m.-
2:30 p.m.

Rabbi Wine
Opens Series

The Greater Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah will begin its three-lecture
series, "Changes 2000." Rabbi
Sherwin Wine will speak on "The
20th Century: What Has It Meant
to Jews?" 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan.
24, at Hadassah House. A dairy
lunch will be served.
Rabbi Wine is the leader of the
Birmingham Temple and the author
of four books.
The other series lecturers will be
Cantor Lori Corrsin of Temple
Israel, 11:30 a.m. Feb. 7; and
Anneke Burke-Kooispra, a righteous
gentile, 6:30 p.m. March 13.
The cost is $12 for one program
