Health care building donated by Nathan I. and Betty Goldin on the Sinai Hospital
campus in West Bloomfield.
Aronsson needed to put some
emotional distance between the hos-
pital's glory years, which were so
integral to his life, and its closing in
the wake of huge financial losses.
When the announcement came that
the building would close, "I just sort
of lost all interest."
Perhaps for those reasons,
Aronsson continued, "Candidly, I
was not impressed with that letter. I
said to myself, 'Do I want all these,
the plaques?' No, I don't."
Realism Sets In
"Listen," said Harris, "when you sell
something for $65 million, you sold
it. It's no longer yours. And you may
have sentimental relationships to it,
which certainly many people do, but
they have to realize they got some-
thing for it. The community certain-
ly came out well ahead on the deal,"
he said, citing the Jewish Fund that
was created from Sinai's sale and the
philanthropic projects it has fostered.
"At least there was a continuity in
the merger," he said.
"It wasn't as if they
shoved a key in the
door and said goodbye
and, 'Forget it, we're
never going to see you
again.'"
Schlussel stressed
the need to focus on
what is realistic for
Sinai. As chairman of
the Jewish Fund, he
and an independent
board oversee the lega-
cy of Sinai's sale from
offices in the Jewish
Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's Max M.
Fisher Building in Bloomfield
Township.
Said Schlussel, "There is no doubt
in anybody's mind who knows what
the circumstances are in health care,
that the Jewish community was inor-
dinately fortunate in having had the
opportunity of merging into the
Medical Center, and of receiving, as
a result of that, a significant sum of
money that is being put to good use
every day in the form of Jewish Fund
grants.
Schlussel described the Sinai
Heritage Committee's efforts as "rea-
soned and appropriate," and certain-
ly adequate.
"It appears to me that what is
being done is obviously a work in
process. It's like a canvas, a mosaic,
and pieces are falling into place," he
said.
Schlussel said there needs to be a
balance between what's reasonable in
recognizing prior donors and "what's
appropriate in terms of moving
towards the future. "0
