"We tend to cling to people who are
similar and who we feel comfortable
with, not because of racism or preju-
dice, but because of human nature,"
Brickner added. "By marching with
people of different ethnicities, we may
be able to open doors to diversity. We
have so much in common with our
black brothers and sisters."
Rabbi Norman Roman of Temple
Kol Ami will participate in the candle-
light vigil on Sunday night. He
explained how important it is to have
a community-wide event with great
participation. The best aspect is "the
cross-generational, cross-racial and
cross-cultural opportunities to gather
and celebrate," he said.
In addition to clergy and profes-
sional members
of the commu-
nity, West
Bloomfield
High School
students will
participate.
Senior Michael
Schonberger
says "the appeal
Michael Schonberger of multicultural-
ism" is what
motivates him
to participate in
the walk.
"People who
interact with
one another
should get past
the prejudice,
stereotypes and
racism," he said.
Another
Stuart Brickner
WBHS senior,
Aliza Willner, is
organizing a "Youth Dialogue" pro-
gram to follow the march. High
school students will divide into groups
and discuss various racial issues and
forms of prejudicial behavior.
"By participating in the walk,"
Willner said, "people are a bit more
open to diversity despite all of the
hate." ❑

Food donations to the Food
Bank of Oakland County may

Luther King Jr. Day at Kroger

Ferndale, Royal Oak, Walled
Lake, West Bloomfield.

America, and I
think that his call
to action resonated
particularly in the
Jewish communi-
ty. The civil
rights movement
that Dr. King led David Gad-Haif
served as a vehi-
cle for leaders of the Jewish,
Catholic and Protestant commu-
nities to come together and work
for a common cause. I think that
We May not even realize the extent
to which our cooperation with
others sterns from the experience
of the 1960s."

Rabbi Ernst
Conrad, found-
ing rabbi emeri-
tus of Temple
Kol And:
"My memory
of Dr. King is as
attending a bien-
Rabbi Ernst
Conrad
nial of the Union
of American
Hebrew Congregations in Chicago
in 1965. He was honored as a pio-
neer, almost proclaimed a prophet
of our generation. A sefer Torah was
presented to him with our kindest
wishes because he represented, as a
Christian minister, the ideals of
Judaism -- namely, to love your
neighbor as yourself, and to love
God with all hearts and our souls
and our might.
"People saw in him new light to
break through the clouds of racial
and rdigious misunderstanding."

Donald Cohen,
Michigan region-
al director of the
Anti Defamation
League:
"Dr. King's
egacy provides a
firm foundation
Donald Cohen
far religious and
acial reconcilia-
on, He understood that the
most effective way to firmly advo-
ate what is best for one's own
community is to advocate what is
t for our country, and to be
ere for others when vital issues
at stake.
The civil rights movement suc-
ceeded, in part, by establishing itself
as working in the American inter-
est, not simply a special interest."
