Strange phone call leads to evacuation and search.

HARRY KIRSBAUM
Staff Writer

A

bizarre call to Jewish Family
Service in Southfield led to
the evacuation of the
Jimmy Prentis Morris
Building of the Jewish Community
Center in Oak Park last week.
"We still don't know if we received
a bomb threat," said David Sorkin,
JCC executive director. "But the Los
Angeles incident has heightened the
awareness to the Jewish community
relative to potential threats."
According ,to Oak Park police
reports, at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan.
6, an unknown male phoned Jewish
Family Service, and asked "Is this the
Jewish center? Is there a bomb?"

A JFS switchboard operator spoke
with a supervisor, who called the JPM
building. The police were then noti-
fied.
The JCC's procedure is to call the
police and follow their suggestions,
said Sorkin. "Even though this one
had some unusual facts on how it
came in, I guess they felt that pru-
dence was the best approach."
Six police cars, a fire truck and an
ambulance were dispatched to the
JPM. The police evacuated 35 mem-
bers and staff from the building, as
well as about 12 children. Doors were
secured and the building searched, but
nothing was found.
Sorkin said a staff walk-through
also was conducted at the JCC's Kahn
Building in West Bloomfield. ❑
