few months ago, a lot of
genealogical surfers ran into
a wall as thousands of infor-
mation-seekers like them-
selves navigated to the newly opened
Web site of the Mormon church's
Family History archives. So many
people were curious to "root" around
for their roots that the "path" to the
well-publicized resource became over-
loaded and difficult to access.
However, Michigan Jews with an
interest in their family's past needn't
have gone to the trouble of clicking
and re-clicking that Mormon site. The
Jewish Genealogical Society of
Michigan's award-winning Web site
www.jgsmi.org is an attractive and
friendly place to get started.

JGS of Michigan, founded by Betty
Provizer Starkman in 1985, is an orga-
nization seeking to aid those compil-
ing their family trees. Through its
Web site, designed and maintained by
webmistress Marilyn Natchez, you can
learn about the organization itself, and
view its calendar of events through
July 2000. The benefits of member-
ship are spelled out, the costs noted,
and an application is available online.
For those seeking free tips, the
"Getting Started" button on the site
offers an informative article for the
novice genealogist.lklso try clicking
on the JewishGen Frequently Asked
Questions link, which is especially
helpful for beginners and gets fre-
quently updated.

The "Resource Room" has a link to
the JewishGen Family Finder, a-data-
base of ancestral towns and surnames
where the surfer can learn if others are
also looking for the same surname or
town of origin. Another link allows us
to locate our family's shtetl (home-
town) on a map. If it's a particular
geographical region we're interested in,
there are lists of special interest groups
to hook onto. And before leaving the
Resource Room page, it's a good idea
to click on the Beth Hatefutsoth
(Israel Diaspora Museum) Direct Link
of the Museum of the Jewish People
Online, which our guide, Marilyn
Natchez, literally and figuratively
applauds. It is an encyclopedia of
Jewish organizations, institutions,
publications and communities . . . a
sure-bet bookmark.
Also on the site's Resource Room
page is the "Your Toolbox" button.
Clicking it is the way to find all kinds
of interesting records: census, natural-
ization, Social Security, death records
and more. Here, we can look through
Jewish orphanages, including the Jewish
Children's Home that was located in
Detroit. There's also a bride index and,
of all things, a link called "Find-a-grave"
— just in case we're curious about
where someone famous, like George
Gershwin, for example, is buried.
Genealogy is a super family project
especially suited for the long, cold
winter months ahead. Let your PC be
