Jennifer and Amanda Segal sit on the bima while their mother looks out into
the sanctuary.

expressed his pride in all of them for
"accomplishing an important task
they did well, without making it a
hardship, doing it because they
wanted to."
Segal speaks of his wife being a
leader. In addition to being a full-
time attorney who also teaches law,
she is a third-grade teacher in the
temple's religious school. He says it
is important for their daughters to
see that their parents work hard on
what is important.
"Our children don't take shortcuts
and don't complain" about going to
Hebrew school after a long day
"because Mom does the same thing,"
he says.
Segal says his wife did not study
to become a bat mitzvah in her spare
time, because she doesn't have any.
Instead, she did it, first, because she
wanted it for herself, and second, "to
show the girls that when you put
your mind to something, you can
find success, no matter how difficult
it is.
As a mitzvah project last summer,
Amanda and Jennifer, who already
participate in the temple's coat drive
and their school's food drive, among
others, became involved with the
temple's day camp. Their father says
they were following their mother's
example as a volunteer as well as her
connection with children and teach-
ing. After completing a three-week
commitment helping at the camp,
both Amanda and Jennifer decided

to cancel their own camp plans and
volunteer for the rest of the summer.
Randy Segal says the enjoyment
his family has of Judaism, including
their participation in the rare b'not
mitzvah service, comes from the fact
that he and wife are "the type to
show and tell, rather than just tell."
A big part of this comes from
their family's regular attendance at
Shabbat services and being the kind
of parents who take their children .
not only to the temple door, but
into the Hebrew school building,
sharing their religious lives. The fact
that Charna Segal became a bat
mitzvah with her daughters reflects
that commitment, he says.
A Jan. 2 party to celebrate was
planned primarily for Amanda and
Jennifer. Charna Segal says she
attended "as their mom — it's their
party."
Cantor Dubov found it "totally
amazing that the first day of the year
and Shabbat coincide with a brand-
new millennium." He found further
fascination in having two genera-
tions represented on the bima.
"In this congregation, we have
never had a combination of three
b'not mitzvah at all, with our 1,460
family units."
Says Amanda: "It's cool to share
with two others in your family — it
helps a lot to have the family there.
And my friends thinks it's cool,
especially the date." 1111
